So, you’re planning a day trip to Nauvo (Nagu)? That’s exciting and honestly, I don’t think there’s anywhere quite like the Finnish Archipelago. With its little islands, winding roads, ferries and sea views, getting there is part of the experience itself. And if you’re wondering what a day…

What do you need to know before booking? 🏡👇🏼 And What do you need to know before booking? 🏡👇🏼

And let me point it out: yes, of course you’ll take photos of the sauna, the lake and the food 😂 But the idea of a cottage is that you unplug. You slow down. And you experience summer like we locals do 🙏✨️

Now, if you’re nodding and thinking “heck yes, I want this!” Here are a few things you should know, coming from someone who has spent summers at a cottage since I was in diapers 😄

🧥 Even though it’s summer, always pack layers!
I’m sure you’re so sick of hearing this already, but even in July, Finnish nights can get chilly. So bring a warm sweater and long pants.

🌬️ If the cottage has a boat, bring a good jacket.
Warm summer weather by the water? Amazing. But if the weather is a little cooler and windy, that wind can be BRUTAL. You’ll definitely want something warmer with you.

😴 Pack a sleeping mask. If you’re not used to around 20–24 hours of daylight, this will SAVE your sleep. Take it from me: I once forgot my sleeping mask and woke up at 4am thinking it was morning because it was SO bright outside 😅

🦟 Do not forget mosquito repellent. Mosquitoes are definitely awake during the Finnish summer, especially around forests and water, so bring a good repellent.

🛒 Do your grocery shopping beforehand. Most cottages are quite remote, so grocery shopping before you head there is really important. You don’t want to arrive at the cottage and realize the next day that you forgot the most important thing: sausages to grill 🙈 Pack those with you by the way, they’re a classic Finnish summer cottage food!

The Finnish archipelago is THE place to be in the The Finnish archipelago is THE place to be in the summer 🌊

With more than 80,000 islands along Finland’s coast, this is one of the world’s largest archipelagos and there is so much more to it than just pretty views.

A few things you might not know:

⛴️ You can explore it without a boat of your own. Many islands and archipelago villages are connected to the mainland by ferries, and plenty of routes are accessible by car, bus or bike.

🏝️ Island hopping is absolutely a thing here. You can keep travelling from one island to another by ferry and turn your trip into a longer archipelago adventure.

🚲 There’s even a 250 km Archipelago Trail around the Turku Archipelago, with ferries, small villages, restaurants and beautiful coastal scenery along the way. The full route usually takes 2–5 days depending on how you travel.

☀️ Summer is when the archipelago really comes alive. This is when you’ll find the most seasonal cafés, restaurants, events and other summer services open, while the long bright days make it perfect for exploring.

🏡 You can visit the archipelago in winter too, but it's much quieter then. The summer crowds are gone and some accommodations and restaurants close for the season.

So when you’re planning a summer trip to Finland, don’t just look at the cities. Leave some room for the islands too 😉

Would you explore the Finnish archipelago? ⛵️

Let’s skip the cities and explore where Finland is the most magical in the summer 🥹✨️

Yes, cities are a great place to start and they’re really beautiful during the summer season, but my advice is always the same: if you visit Finland in the summer, go further than the cities 🚗

Explore the nature, the archipelago, cottage culture, small towns, local cafés and summer markets. And seek out those seasonal places and experiences that are only available during the summer ☀️ The ones that truly come alive during these few short months and that you can’t really experience in the same way in any other season.

That’s the side of Finland I’d want you to see in the summer 🥰

So yes, see Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and the other cities, but don’t stop there 👀

We did a little summer day trip to Nauvo last week and it was such a fun day! ⛵️

Nauvo is super easy to reach from Turku, and the guest harbour is one of the liveliest and most beautiful I’ve seen in Finland. You could easily spend a few hours here exploring the harbour, checking out the little shops, grabbing something to eat and watching all the boats come and go.

A few things to know before you go:

🚗 You can easily drive to Nauvo from Turku, and the free ferry runs every 15 minutes. During the summer months, the ferry can get pretty busy and you may have to wait, especially around Midsummer when many locals are heading to their summer cottages.

🚌 You can also take the Saaristo Bus from Turku. The bus has priority at the ferry, so it gets on before the cars and you don’t have to wait in the car queue.

☀️ We went in mid-August, after the schools had started again, and didn’t have to wait at all. So if you want to avoid the busiest times and longer ferry queues, visiting later in the summer can be a good option.

🏝️ Nauvo is also a great starting point for exploring more of the Finnish archipelago. From here, you can continue island-hopping further by ferry and explore more of the islands and destinations along the way.

If you’re staying in Turku and want to get a taste of the Finnish archipelago, Nauvo is one of the easiest places to start 😍

Don't get me wrong, I love Helsinki, and yes, Lapl Don't get me wrong, I love Helsinki, and yes, Lapland deserves the hype too 🙌🏼

But sometimes the best part of a trip isn't the place everyone told you to visit... it's the random stop you almost drove past because you were too busy following Google Maps to the next "must-see" attraction 🙈😂

Some of my favorite memories from exploring Finland have come from those completely unexpected finds. The places I had zero expectations for... and somehow ended up loving the most 🥹

That's exactly the side of Finland I love sharing here. Not just the places everyone already knows, but the ones that make you stop and think, "Why didn't I know about this sooner?" 😍

So when you're planning your Finland trip, leave a little room in your itinerary for the unexpected. The best discoveries rarely come with a giant "must-see" sign 🫶🏼
