Herrankukkaro: One of Finland’s most unique places to stay
If there’s one thing I love recommending to people visiting Finland, it’s staying somewhere that feels like an experience rather than just a place to sleep.
Finland has plenty of beautiful hotels, but every now and then you come across a place that’s unlike anything else.
Herrankukkaro is one of those places.
I absolutely love finding unique accommodations that feel so different from the normal city hotels. Places that have some sort of chacarter and often located somewhere close to nature

So, let me introduce you to one of my favourite discoveries in the Turku Archipelago.

What is Herrankukkaro?
I recently had the chance to spend a night at Herrankukkaro, and I can honestly say it’s one of the most unique places I’ve stayed in Finland.
Located in the beautiful Turku Archipelago, around 40 minutes from Turku city centre, Herrankukkaro isn’t your typical hotel. It’s built around an old fishing farm, and instead of feeling like a modern hotel complex, it feels like stepping into a completely different world where Finnish traditions, nature and the archipelago all come together.
What makes Herrankukkaro especially unique is that it’s primarily designed for groups, retreats and events. However, throughout the year they also open their doors to individual visitors during special themed weekends, giving anyone the chance to experience this one-of-a-kind place.
Whether you’re already exploring Turku or road-tripping through the archipelago, it’s an easy escape from the city and a completely different side of Finland.
First impressions
As soon as I arrived, I was blown away by how the place looked. Before my visit, I’d only seen a few photos online, but they really didn’t do it justice.
The first thing I noticed was how peaceful everything felt. Even though it was only a 40 minute drive from Turku, it felt like I’d travelled much further away. There was no city noise, just the sound of the sea and birds.
I was also surprised by how big the whole area was. For some reason, I was expecting just a handful of accommodations, but there were so many different buildings and places to explore. As we wandered around, it felt like every corner revealed something new, a unique place to stay, a beautiful view over the archipelago or another peaceful walking path.
That’s when I realised Herrankukkaro is much more than just a place to spend the night. It’s an experience in itself.
What makes Herrankukkaro so special?
There are many things that make Herrankukkaro a unique place to visit. Here are some of the things that stood out during my stay.
The archipelago setting
Instead of waking up in the middle of a busy city, you’re surrounded by the sea, forests and peaceful nature. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down without even trying.
One of my favourite things about Herrankukkaro is that you don’t have to choose between the city and nature. It’s only around a 40-minute drive from Turku, so you can spend the day exploring the city before escaping to the peaceful archipelago for the evening.
The unique accommodation
One of the most unique accommodation options at Herrankukkaro are the birdhouses. We stayed in one of the red birdhouses, and it was easily one of the cosiest places I’ve stayed in Finland.
From the outside, it looked absolutely adorable, which only made me more excited to step inside. The wooden interior gave it such a warm and cosy feel, and it felt much more personal than a standard hotel room.
Our birdhouse had space for two downstairs, an upstairs loft with two additional beds, a small kitchenette, a bathroom and… the best part: our own private sauna. Safe to say, I was sold.
Alongside the birdhouses, you’ll also find charming cottages and other accommodation options spread throughout the property. Walking around the area almost feels like exploring a small village, with different buildings tucked between the trees and along the shoreline.
Historic details everywhere
One of the first things I noticed was all the old fishing equipment and historic buildings scattered around the property. Herrankukkaro was built around an old fishing village, and you can really feel that history everywhere you go.
Instead of looking like a modern resort, it feels authentic, full of character, and completely different from anywhere else I’ve stayed.
Experiences in Herrankukkaro
One of the things I liked most about Herrankukkaro is that it’s not just somewhere you sleep for the night. It’s a place where you can easily spend a couple of days without running out of things to do.
We only stayed for one night, so we didn’t have time to try everything, but there was plenty on offer. Depending on the season, you can swim, paddleboard, play outdoor games, or even tackle the adventure course in the trees.
The smoke sauna
The highlight of the whole experience has to be the sauna.
Herrankukkaro is home to the world’s largest ground smoke sauna, with space for up to 124 people at once. I’d never experienced a smoke sauna before, so I had no idea what to expect.
The first thing I noticed was how dark it was. I could barely see anything when I stepped inside, which somehow made the whole experience feel even more mysterious. It was also the biggest sauna I’ve ever been in and you could feel the heat in every part of the sauna. Despite its size, the atmosphere was surprisingly calm and relaxing.
Afterwards, you can cool off with a dip in the sea or unwind in one of the warm outdoor pools overlooking the archipelago.
I also have to mention how beautiful the entire sauna area is.
It’s surrounded by natural rocks and traditional wooden buildings, making it feel like it blends perfectly into the surrounding nature. It didn’t feel like a modern spa, in the best possible way. It felt authentic, peaceful and very Finnish.
Ending the evening
To finish the evening, we all gather around a campfire where everyone grills their own sausages over an open fire. This is an optional experience you can add to your booking for €22 per person, and I’d definitely recommend it.
I have to admit… I’m not the most patient person when it comes to food, so having to grill my own sausage (which took surprisingly longer than I expected) definitely tested my patience. But honestly, it ended up being such a fun experience.
There’s something special about sitting around a campfire by the sea after a sauna that just feels so… Finnish.
Who would love staying here?
Even though families can absolutely enjoy Herrankukkaro too, I personally felt like it was better suited to couples and adults looking for a peaceful getaway.
The whole atmosphere is calm and relaxing, making it the kind of place where you can truly switch off for a couple of days. Whether you’re celebrating something special, planning a romantic weekend or simply looking to escape the busy pace of everyday life, I think this is the kind of place you’ll appreciate the most.
That said, if you’re travelling with older kids who enjoy nature, saunas and outdoor activities, I can definitely see them having a great time here too.
Things to know before book
Before you plan your visit, here are a few practical things to know to make your stay at Herrankukkaro as smooth as possible, from getting there to what to expect during your visit.
Arriving at Herrankukkaro
The easiest way to get to Herrankukkaro is by car, as it’s located in a quiet part of the Turku Archipelago. There is free parking available on-site. If you’re relying on public transport, you can reach the nearby area by bus, but you’ll likely need to arrange a taxi for the final part of the journey.
Best season to visit
Herrankukkaro is open year-round, but if it’s your first visit, I’d recommend summer. Long daylight hours, warm weather, swimming in the sea, and the archipelago at its greenest make it a truly special experience.
What to pack
- Sleep mask. Finnish summer nights stay incredibly bright. I was so glad I packed a sleep mask because our birdhouse accommodation didn’t have blackout curtains. If you’re a light sleeper, you’ll definitely appreciate having one.
- Flip-flops or sandals. If you’re planning to visit the smoke sauna (which I highly recommend), bring flip-flops or sandals. The sauna is a short walk from the accommodations, so it’s much more comfortable than walking barefoot.
- Swimwear. You’ll need it for the smoke sauna and swimming in the Baltic Sea.
- A warm layer. Even in summer, evenings in the archipelago can get surprisingly cool, especially by the water.
- Mosquito repellent (optional, depending on when you visit) Mosquitoes aren’t always a problem, but if you’re visiting in early or mid-summer, it’s worth packing some repellent just in case.
Final thoughts
This was honestly one of the most memorable stays I’ve ever had in Finland, and I’m already dreaming about going back.
